Preparing for tertiary education
It is not always necessary to complete year 12 in order to access
tertiary education. There are several alternate pathways for adults who are
returning to study.
University bridging courses
By undertaking a university bridging course, you can develop the
confidence, knowledge and skills necessary for tertiary entrance. Many bridging
courses offer flexible learning styles and external enrolment by distance,
helping you to find an option that best fits your current situation.

QTAC alternative entry
The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) provides an option
for alternative entry to tertiary study for some people who have not completed
Year 12 or do not have formal academic qualifications. Visit the QTAC website to check your eligibility for alternative
entry to tertiary study.
Adult tertiary preparation at TAFE
TAFE offers an Adult Tertiary Preparation program to provide people
aged over 18 with the knowledge and skills required for successful tertiary study.
No previous Year Level standard is required, as this course is equal to Year 11
and 12.

Completing your high school education
If you are an adult wishing to complete your high school education and
achieve an Overall Position (OP), you may wish to consider the following
options:
TAFE Queensland
By studying at TAFE Queensland, you can achieve a Year 10 or Years 11
and 12 equivalent in an encouraging and relaxed adult education setting. Visit

Through TAFE Open Learning you can enrol at any time of the year,
study at your own pace and study anywhere and any time that is convenient for

Distance education
If you live in a remote location or would simply prefer to study from
home, you can complete your high school education through one of Education
Queensland's seven schools of distance education.

learning.
Enrolling in a state high school as
an adult student
Your eligibility to enrol at a state high school as a Mature Age
Student is subject to:
- a criminal history check
- how many years of enrolment you have already had in a state school
- the subject availability and capacity of your chosen school.

education specifically set up to provide day and evening classes for adult
students:
In addition, some mainstream state schools also provide flexible
programs with part-time or full-time options suitable for adult students. Use
the Schools Directory to locate schools in your

application process.
