How To Keep Learning When You Don't Have Time To Study

"I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” Abraham Lincoln

Not all of us are at a time in our life where we can participate in formal education. So how do we ensure that our minds stay active and stimulated, whether you are a stay at home mum, busy at work, or for any other reason. Here are a few suggestions to get you on the journey of becoming a life long learner:

  • Read, Read, Read – read your scriptures, uplifting books and magazines, read news articles to keep up to date. Mix it up. Read fiction and non-fiction. Keep one or more books by your bed, in the kitchen, on your desk, or in the toilet that you can pick up when you have the chance.
  • Memorise – learn your favorite scriptures, quotes and poems and commit them to memory
  • Start a book club – gather a group of friends with similar standards and meet once a month to discuss a book you have read.
  • Be inquisitive – ask questions. we learn so much by speaking to people and finding out more about what interests them.
  • Learn more about what is around you – Look more closely at your world, and examine both the usual and the unusual. If you see something in your surroundings that you don’t know much about, hop onto google and find out more about it. Eg. if you hear an interesting bird call, try to discover what it is.
  • Try to answer questions on quiz shows on tv
  • Develop a talent or discover a new one
  • Increase your understanding - even when you're learning the things you have to, such as on-the-job knowledge, seek to go beyond what you're being asked to learn. Look at the history, case studies, different applications, etc., to make your learning experience much more well-rounded.
  • Try some free TED Talks or iTunes University for comprehensive presentations from famous professors and experts in their fields.
  • Create. Not all learning comes from outside you. In fact, some of the most powerful learning happens when you are creating or formulating something for yourself.
